The Joy of Bunting

As we’re busy planning our upcoming bunting workshop with Laura from Is Olde, I have been reflecting on the joy of bunting and the place it has held in important celebrations for me in recent years. For me, bunting is a wonderful, creative, plastic-free alternative for event decorations. So much creativity and expression can go into each triangle and the overall effect transports me to times when we were much gentler on the planet. Creating bunting that can be used during lots of different events, milestones and celebrations, collecting memories is such a special project to embark on.

Wedding Bunting

For Kay’s Wedding Blessing last year, a group of her loved ones came together where we created bunting by bundle dying with natural dye materials to create bunting to be hung up at the wedding, behind the altar for the ceremony. This enhanced the ceremony set up, while adding connection for those who had helped make the bunting. This bunting now holds this love, not only in the making of the bunting but also the love shared during the ceremony. This process allowed for meaning to be added into the wedding decorations, while creating something that can be used for years to come.

Birth Bunting

Last year, in celebration of my baby soon to arrive, a very lovely friend handmade some bunting for us. This bunting is made of lots of different materials, with my favourite having a shell on it, strung together with a piece of ribbon. Holding the intentions of a healthy birth and baby, we hung the bunting above the fireplace where we began birthing at home and the bunting now hangs on Baby Ray’s bookshelf. This is such a special gift that is versatile in where it hangs in our home, holding memories and intentions for our parenting journey.

Milestone Bunting

In 2022, Kay, Zo and I, along with two of our other friends participated in Art Trail. The night before our first day, our beautiful friend held a circle for us to acknowledge and mark this milestone. As part of this evening, she had made us some bunting with lots of different beautiful materials, where with fabric markers we wrote our intentions and hopes for the coming few weeks. This was such a special way to mark this time and create something that we can continue to use after Art Trail had finished.

I really love the use of bunting at events and the love that can be put into making the bunting to make the event even more special. I am really looking forward to learning to make bunting with Laura and create a reusable decoration by upcycling materials. I wonder what memories this new bunting will hold?

With gratitude,

A
