Creativity is innate to all of us

Since I was a child, I have heard people referring to themselves and others, as either a creative person or not a creative person. It seems like the assumption is often that you're either gifted at birth with creativity or you don't have a creative bone in your body.

I am a firm believer that all humans, are innately creative. Here is my case for the creativity in us all.

  1. Creativity takes many different forms, not only the traditional arts that we often first think of. Creativity can manifest through all parts of day-to-day life - decorating a home, cooking a delicious dinner, creating a garden or finding a gift for a friend. Creativity can be found in the mundane and the moments between. Recently, I have been creating Spotify playlists based on colours, for example 'Songs that sound like green' - now tell me that is not creative.

  2. Creativity ebbs and flows, like everything in life. We all go through seasons of feeling more or less creative. Sometimes it feels like we have all of the time and energy to invest in creative projects that fill us with joy. Other times it feels like we are chasing our tails just to keep our lives from falling into complete chaos.

  3. Creativity is a human default. However the pressures of modern day life can cloud the importance of creativity. A 9-5 schedule and the expectations placed on all of us to maintain a certain life can consume our lives, leaving little time or space to be creative. Think back to when you were last on a holiday - did you feel like you had more time to journal, draw or create future plans?

  4. Creativity flows easiest when we feel safe. If we feel supported, encouraged and relaxed, we are better placed to feel creative.

  5. If no one sees your creativity, it still exists. In a world where Instagram rules many of us, it can feel like our personalities need to be on show for all to see. Your creativity can be just for you, and you alone.

  6. Creativity exists on a spectrum - people cannot be categorised as simply 'creative' or 'not creative'. Where you currently fall on the spectrum is based on all of the points above.

Are you still thinking 'yeah yeah, but i'm just not a creative person.'? Well, let me leave you with an anecdote about my two youngest sisters, Luella and Mikisa (Miki). Firstly, my Mum will tell you that she is not a creative person but she named her children Kaysanne, Jariah, Luella and Mikisa - um hello?! But moving on to my wonderful sisters...

For a long time, Luella and Miki have adamantly denied being creative, with claims that they are simply not creative or that 'Kaysanne is the creative sister'.

In April this year, some beautiful friends organised a wedding blessing for me in the lead up to me marrying the love of my life. As part of this, Luella and Miki, knowing my love of art and recycling, had organised an activity for us all to do.

For years, my Mum has walked her dogs along Bunbury beaches, collecting sea glass that washes in. Over the years she has collected bags and bags of sea glass, without any real idea of what to do with it. Luella and Miki's craft idea was to stick different coloured sea glass to an old recycled glass table top with resin. The idea was that once completed, we could put lights behind it to have on display at our wedding reception.

This incredibly thoughtful craft activity created a beautiful memory and a piece of art that my husband and I will cherish forever. It reminds me of my sisters and their thoughtfulness, the time spent with friends making the sea glass mosaic and the beautiful wedding that followed.

Our wedding reception was held in a shed at our beautiful home. Proudly on display behind the bar, was the sea glass mosaic, lit up by fairy lights. Like every part of our wedding, this piece of art was lovingly put together by our friends and family.

Now, what is more creative than that?

Sending love and creative energy,

-Kaysanne
